Common Orthodontic Emergencies
Broken Braces or Wires
Brackets, wires, or bands may break or come loose, leading to discomfort and potential delays in treatment. A broken wire can poke your cheeks or gums, causing irritation or sores. If this happens:
- Do not try to remove the wire yourself if it is still attached.
- Use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges temporarily.
- Contact us as soon as possible for a repair.
These issues are most common with ceramic and metal braces, which can sometimes shift or detach with impact or eating hard foods.
Lost or Loose Orthodontic Appliances
Retainers, palatal expanders, or other appliances are crucial to your treatment progress. If they become loose or lost:
- Do not wait—replacing or adjusting them quickly prevents setbacks.
- Store any removable appliances safely when not in use to avoid damage.
- Call our office to determine the next steps.
Severe Pain or Discomfort
Mild discomfort after an adjustment is expected, but severe pain isn’t. If you’re experiencing persistent pain or swelling:
- Rinse with warm salt water to reduce irritation.
- Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed for soreness.
- Contact us immediately if the pain does not improve or worsens.
Clear Aligner Issues
Clear aligners should fit snugly and comfortably. If you experience:
- A cracked or broken aligner, stop wearing it and use the previous set until we provide a replacement.
- Severe discomfort or irritation, let us know so we can adjust your treatment plan.
- A lost aligner, wear the previous tray to maintain progress and contact us for a replacement.
